1. What are the advantages of renting a private holiday villa?

A private villa offers you, your family and friends a true experience; more space and comfort, more privacy, and more personal service. The whole villa, the garden, the swimming pool are there for your own use. The up close and personal service and facilities offered by the villas are simply incomparable.

Renting a private villa through Coconut Land & House is great value and turns out to be very cost-effective. When calculated on a per bedroom or per person basis and considering all the "extras" you'd have to pay in a hotel, a villa vacation is a lot cheaper than staying at one of Koh Samui's best hotels or resorts.

Expenses for food and drink, snacks, laundry, overseas telephone and fax etc. are charged at cost, or some with a single service charge, and therefore much lower compared to a hotel where they can easily double or triple your bill.

Even more important, a villa vacation is like relaxing in your own tropical dream home on Koh Samui. Having enjoyed a villa vacation once, you're unlikely to want to stay in a resort or hotel, ever again!

For equivalent to the cost of staying at a good hotel in Koh Samui (approx. US$100 up per room per day) you can now enjoy the luxury of a beautiful private villa with air-conditioned bedrooms, spacious living and dining areas and open terraces, a lush tropical garden with your semi private swimming pool.

If you choose to have your own house staff (a cook or a maid), be certain that they are familiar with foreigners' requirements and preferences and will look after you well.

Therefore, taking all the extra expense of staying at a hotel into account, the "luxury" of renting a private holiday villa through Coconut Land & House will not only turn out to be more luxurious but also much cheaper !

2. What else is different from staying in a hotel?

There is usually a minimum rental period for a private holiday villa, normally 3 to 5 days.

In addition to modern amenities, any villa you rent will reflect the island lifestyle: floors and walls are made from local wood, bamboo, and natural stone, high roofs cover airy living and dining areas, and large garden bathrooms are full of flowers and plants.

And you'll experience all the comforts you'd expect in any private home.

When you choose it to be an in-house service, you can have interesting local meals or any special diet prepared by your own cook. Or you can ask your house staff to bring in delicacies from nearby restaurants - and have them served whenever and wherever you like.

You can order your favorite snacks and drinks to be bought for you at the local supermarket. You'll be surprised of the low cost when you pay the same prices as locals do!

Instead of staying in hotel rooms (usually fitted with the basic comfort and furniture and small room), you and your family or friends will enjoy to have much more space, more informality, more privacy, and more personal service than even the best hotels may provide.

3. What extras do I pay in a villa?

You only pay extra for telephone calls, faxes, laundry. The food and beverage are on your own account and you may have your meals prepared by your cook when available. You can either let your house staff do the shopping, or you can enjoy a trip to one of Koh Samui' fresh markets or supermarkets yourself.

The fact is that staying in a villa will save you 60% to 80% on food and beverage expenses, as these charges are at cost, compared to staying at a good hotel where all 'extras' (meals, snacks and drinks, mini bar, laundry, telephone, fax, and the 10% service charge and 7% VAT) add up quickly to double or triple your final bill!

4. Do I need a visa to travel to Thailand?

Not for most countries. We listed the 59 countries whose nationals are eligible for a 30-day stay in Thailand without a visa for the purpose of tourism. You must have a valid passport (6-month validity) and proof of confirmed air tickets showing 30 days or less in Thailand.

5. What about traveling with children?

There is no concern about traveling with children in Koh Samui and Thailand in general. Koh Samui is a paradise for children, and Thai people adore children. In your villa, in restaurants, and wherever you go, there will always be someone to take care of them.

The sea conditions are perfect nearly all year round, making it safe for your children to swim. You should be cautious of underwater currents when the sea is agitated though.

A wide range of food and hygiene products is available in the local supermarkets including imported baby food. These stores are open till late, seven days a week.

There are also international-standard clinics such as the SIH (Samui International Hospital-www.sih.co.th) and doctors-on-call available should you or your children ever need medical advice or attention.

6. When is the best period to visit Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is a preferred holiday destination for nearly 10 months a year. Mid January to late May and July till end of October as well as the periods over Christmas and New Year, Lunar New Year (in early February) are considered by most villa owners/management as High Season, sometimes even peak period. The monsoon months are usually November till mid-December.

There is a surcharge added to the regular rental rate for Peak seasons and an additional minimum rental period is required (5 days).

7. Is Koh Samui Safe?

YES. Thailand is internationally re-known for its extreme stability at all level of the society (politically, economically, socially, religiously). There is not one other destination in South East Asia reaching the same level as Thailand.

Furthermore, the tourism industry has led the successive governments to drastically improve the transportation (roads, railway, airline) and telecommunication networks to render it safe and practical anywhere in the country.

We invite you to visit the Tourism Authority of Thailand web page (www.tat.or.th) for further information and description.

8. Tell me more about the Transport on Koh Samui.

Coconut Land & House recommends you to rent a self-drive air-conditioned vehicle (car or 4 wheel drive jeep) for your private use. You may also wish to rent your car in advance. In such a case we highly recommend to book it with Budget as their cars are in premium conditions and are insured (which is usually not the case when renting cars off other operators).

Small motorcycles can also be hired for a small daily fee but be wise and please wear a crash helmet.

Traveling around Koh Samui is very easy and inexpensive. The transport services are available all around the island. If you wish you can simply hail one of the many taxi trucks, taxi cabs and taxi motorbikes anytime of the day and night.
